Power Abuse in Academia: Responses and Prevention
26.03.2025; 1 to 2 p.m. via Zoom
Power abuse remains a critical challenge in German academia, where steep power imbalances, limited transparency, and a lack of accountability can foster unethical behaviors such as bullying, exploitation, and fraud. Only more recently is the significant damage acknowledged that is often caused by it.
The lunch talk will explore how structural vulnerabilities impact academic environments and the personal experiences of those affected. Prof. Daniel Leising from TU Dresden will examine the factors that permit or promote misconduct, discuss emergency responses available to individuals facing these challenges, and highlight broader reforms needed to prevent future abuse.
